Conventional camera connoisseurs shivered when Apple released the all new iPhone 11 Pro Max. True to its Max name, this rendition is the fully loaded edition of the iPhone 11. Equipped with a 6.5” Super Retina XDR display, the latest iPhone’s screen is fantastic for editing and viewing your Instagram photos. 4K video recording with up to 60 fps also make this unique device the perfect tool for chronicling your adventures in video form! By far, the most innovative highlight of the iPhone Pro Max that sets it apart from other smartphones (including the rest of the iPhone 11 line) is its cameras. Yes, that’s right: cameras, plural!

The iPhone 11 Pro Max features not one, not two, but three separate cameras on its back. The Ultra Wide, Wide and Telephoto cameras of the Pro Max are fully loaded with Night mode capabilities. For many smartphone enthusiasts who enjoy photography, this is a major game changer! Influencers and content creators who thrive online will certainly enjoy the nearly limitless opportunities that the iPhone Pro Max presents in terms of photography and videography.

But how do DSLR and mirrorless photographers feel about this powerhouse smartphone? Adventure photographer, Edward Tomasso weighs in.

In the shift from film to digital, photography became more accessible than ever before. Skip forward to the smartphone era, and the playing field has more than completely changed. Some photographers view this as a positive evolution; others question whether or not this puts their livelihood at risk. With photography gear and processes simpler than ever before, almost anyone can call themselves photographers. In Edward Tomasso’s view, this isn’t such a bad thing after all. Still, he questions the impact of devices, such as the iPhone 11 Pro Max, that appear to make photography just a little too easy.

An experienced photographer will always suggest that true talent exists in the photographer who is able to seamlessly fit a photo into their portfolio -- regardless of camera body or other equipment. When a camera can do it all for you, what can be said about your photography skill level? Tomasso, as well as many other renowned travel photographers, believes that the photographer should make the portfolio -- not the camera or gear.

Even still, the iPhone 11 Pro Max certainly looks like an incredible pocket-sized powerhouse. Whether or not it’s truly the greatest compact camera on the market depends entirely on your style and approach to photography!
