Canon G7X II vs Canon G7X III: Is it worth upgrading?

Edward Tomasso Canon G7X IISince its debut in 2014, Canon G7X has been a leader in the market of professional quality point-and-shoot cameras. Fueled by travel and convenience, this line of cameras has been a staple in Adventure Photographer, Edward Tomasso’s kit. In August 2019, Canon released the Mark III edition of G7X -- but is it worth upgrading from the Mark II? Tomasso investigates!

Photographers who lean towards the pocket-sized and easy-to-use options have been raving about Canon G7X since its initial release in 2014. Perfect for the on-the-go adventure photographer or travel enthusiast, this relatively simple point-and-shoot has been a game changer. Small and compact, it literally fits in your pocket, just like Canon’s other notoriously pint-sized PowerShot cameras. But what really makes the G7X shine isn’t how small it is, but rather how stellar the quality is for the size of its body. Professional freelance photographers have long adored the G7X as a quick, on-the-go alternative to large DSLR kits. And it’s not hard to see why! This line packs quite the professional punch in a pocket-sized package.

Recently, Canon released the G7X III as the third installment to the line. With only minor updates seen in the jump from the initial release to the Mark II, Canon fans weren’t expecting much of a wave from the Mark III. But after taking a look for himself, Edward Tomasso is thrilled to say that the G7X III is a major upgrade from its predecessor!

What does the Canon G7X III have that the G7X II does not?

4K

For starters, the Mark III now offers 4K. Perhaps Canon is finally taking a page from Sony’s book here -- 4K is certainly the way forward! The Mark II edition only offers up to 1080p. Although the quality is still phenomenal in 1080p, it’s clear that 4K will soon dominate the market.

Microphone Input

Vloggers all across YouTube are rejoicing over this one! Finally, the G7X is capable of upgraded audio via connected microphone (without any wild tech hacks)!

Live Streaming Ready

This update seems to be a gift to vloggers, who have long championed Canon’s PowerShot line as a ‘must’ for vlogging. Of course, you can live stream with the Mark II. But in the age of simplifying the complex, it’s nice to be able to cut out quite a few steps.

And that’s only the tip of the iceberg! Freelance Photographer, Edward Tomasso eagerly anticipates securing the Mark III for his collection. He looks forward to testing the waters and diving further into this incredible camera’s unbelievable abilities!
