Travalyst: Tourism Fused with 'Sustainability'

Following in the footsteps of his mother, who is remembered by her unwavering dedication to compassion, Prince Harry has launched an initiative called Travalyst. Adventure photographer and travel enthusiast, Edward Tomasso weighs in on the program’s recent debut.

Urged by universal matters the likes of climate change and global warming, Prince Harry recently unveiled a new project: Travalyst. The goal of this initiative is simple: transform travel into a catalyst for greater good. But what exactly does this mean? And how are the effort’s leaders aiming to accomplish the transformation of the future of travel for everyone?

According to Travalyst, international tourism is on the rise -- both for business and pleasure. Since 2000, international travel has more than doubled; the same increase is projected to occur yet again by 2030. Recognizing this evolution, Prince Harry has joined forces with major players in the travel industry in order to make this increase a truly positive one.

Centered around a concept of sustainable travel, Travalyst claims to be more about protecting the planet than anything else. It’s no surprise that with more travel comes more waste and carbon emissions. That’s why Prince Harry and the Travalyst team is aiming to ensure that the traveler’s impact on the environment is positive and long-lasting.

But how exactly does Travalyst intend on conserving natural resources and protecting plant and animal life? What exactly is sustainable travel?

While the idea in itself sounds heart-warming and positive, the actual plan of action is somehow missing. Prince Harry is backed by Booking, Ctrip, Skyscanner, TripAdvisor and Visa with a so-called ambition to impact travel for good… but how exactly this good will be accomplished is unclear. Skeptics are concerned that this may simply be a money grab; an opportunity for major travel companies and brands to tell the world that they care, without doing much more than that. In truth, it’s almost a bit hypocritical that British royalty, who enjoys private jet holidays on the regular, would suddenly turn around to say “let’s make travel sustainable!”

Only time will tell what comes out of Travalyst. True environmentalists and world travelers will simply have to wait it out and hope for the best.
